What Is Muay Thai?

Why Train at Kings Academy Muay Thai?

Known as the “Art of Eight Limbs”, Muay Thai is a traditional martial art from Thailand that combines punches, kicks, elbows, and knees in a powerful and dynamic system. Unlike other striking sports, Muay Thai focuses on full-body coordination, endurance, and controlled aggression. It’s not just about fighting, it’s about developing confidence, balance, and mental strength. Also called Thai-boxing and Thai Kickboxing.

THE HISTORY OF MUAY THAI KICKBOXING

Muay Thai's Early Rise

The old Kingdom of Siam, now Thailand, has always had trouble with its neighbours. Amazingly, this "Land of the Free" has resisted all conquests. This can be attributed to the fierce fighting spirit of the people. Muay Thai techniques were part of the military training system, which was greatly influenced by Chinese fighting methods in the beginning. It later changed and developed independently, losing many of the Chinese boxing methods along the way.

The Tiger King

Further skills were developed during the reign of King Pra Chao Sua, who was known as the Tiger King. Every village staged prize fights with people of all ages and statuses. The king was a skilled boxer and reportedly trained with his soldiers six hours a day. He would leave his palace disguised as a wandering peasant and enter boxing events and defeated numerous local champions.

The Greatest Fighter of Them All

Nai Khanom Tom was one of the most famous of all Siamese fighters. He was a brilliant athlete and a courageous man. Many regarded him as the best fighter in all Siam. During the many wars that Siam had, Nai Khanom Tom was captured by Burmese soldiers. They pitted him against 12 of Burma's top bando fighters (similar to Thai Boxing), and if he could defeat all 12, he would be allowed to go free. As he fought each one, they were taken out by lighting elbow strikes and fierce knee blows. Spectators loved him and were full of admiration for the prisoner. The King of Burma had no alternative but to let him go free.
  • What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a Martial Art that focuses on striking using punches, kicks, knees and elbows and upright grappling know as clinching. It is referred to as the Art of Eight Limbs for this reason.

  • Can I try a Muay Thai class before I join?

Yes. We offer a FREE 1 Week Trial so you can experience Muay Thai at Kings Academy, meet our coaching team and see our facilities before deciding to join.

  • What is the difference between Muay Thai and Boxing?

Boxers only use their fists as weapons, while Muay Thai fighters use their fists, elbows, knees, and shins.

As a result, there are many more techniques to learn when training Muay Thai. Muay Thai also includes clinch work, which is frowned upon in boxing. Both Boxing and Muay Thai have Amateur and Professional competition.

  • What type of classes do you offer?

We have classes for all ages and skill levels. We have a 6-12 years Primary class, and our Adults classes which are 13 years and up.

  • How are the Muay Thai classes Structured?

We split our classes up into Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced students. Each group has their own Instructor who will teach them the skills most applicable to their level of Muay Thai. We have a grading syllabus where you will learn the moves of Muay Thai to progress to the next level. As your rank moves forward you will move up from Beginner, to Intermediate and eventually the Advanced class.

  • Do you have Women’s Only Muay Thai Classes?

We don't have Women’s only Muay Thai classes at Kings Academy. We do have women who train in our Muay Thai classes.

  • Why should I train Muay Thai at Kings Academy?

Kings Academy is one of Western Sydney's most respected Muay Thai gyms, with structured classes from complete beginner through to our dedicated Fighters Class for students preparing to compete.

You'll train authentic Muay Thai technique under experienced coaches, in a facility built for serious training - including a ring, bag room, and full conditioning setup.

  • Is there a uniform for Muay Thai

Yes, for Muay Thai you need a ranked Muay Thai shirt (it has the Gym logo in the colour of your rank), a pair of Muay Thai shorts and hand wraps.

You’ll also eventually need to get your own training equipment initially with Boxing Gloves, then eventually you’ll also need Shinpads, Groin Guard, Mouthguard, Elbow Guard, and Knee Guard to make the most of your training.

  • Is Muay Thai safe for beginners?

Yes. Beginner classes are taught at a controlled pace with a strong focus on technique first. Sparring is introduced gradually and only when you're ready, always under close supervision from our coaches.

  • How often should I train Muay Thai?

Most beginners start with 2–3 sessions per week to build technique, fitness and confidence. As you progress, many students increase this to suit their fitness and competition goals.

  • Do I need to be fit to start Muay Thai?

No. Many members join with no prior fitness or martial arts background. Muay Thai is a fantastic way to build fitness - it's not something you need beforehand.

The secret to getting fit is getting started.
