What Is Muay Thai?

Known as the “Art of Eight Limbs”, Muay Thai is a traditional martial art from Thailand that combines punches, kicks, elbows, and knees in a powerful and dynamic system. Unlike other striking sports, Muay Thai focuses on full-body coordination, endurance, and controlled aggression. It’s not just about fighting, it’s about developing confidence, balance, and mental strength.

THE HISTORY OF MUAY THAI KICKBOXING

Muay Thai's Early Rise

The old Kingdom of Siam, now Thailand, has always had trouble with its neighbours. Amazingly, this "Land of the Free" has resisted all conquests. This can be attributed to the fierce fighting spirit of the people. Muay Thai techniques were part of the military training system, which was greatly influenced by Chinese fighting methods in the beginning. It later changed and developed independently, losing many of the Chinese boxing methods along the way.

The Tiger King

Further skills were developed during the reign of King Pra Chao Sua, who was known as the Tiger King. Every village staged prize fights with people of all ages and statuses. The king was a skilled boxer and reportedly trained with his soldiers six hours a day. He would leave his palace disguised as a wandering peasant and enter boxing events and defeated numerous local champions.

The Greatest Fighter of Them All

Nai Khanom Tom was one of the most famous of all Siamese fighters. He was a brilliant athlete and a courageous man. Many regarded him as the best fighter in all Siam. During the many wars that Siam had, Nai Khanom Tom was captured by Burmese soldiers. They pitted him against 12 of Burma's top bando fighters (similar to Thai Boxing), and if he could defeat all 12, he would be allowed to go free. As he fought each one, they were taken out by lighting elbow strikes and fierce knee blows. Spectators loved him and were full of admiration for the prisoner. The King of Burma had no alternative but to let him go free.
  • What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai is a Martial Art that focuses on striking using punches, kicks, knees and elbows and upright grappling know as clinching. It is referred to as the Art of Eight Limbs for this reason.

  • What is the difference between Muay Thai and Boxing?

Boxers only use their fists as weapons, while Muay Thai fighters use their fists, elbows, knees, and shins. As a result, there are many more techniques to learn when training Muay Thai. Muay Thai also includes clinch work, which is frowned upon in boxing. Both Boxing and Muay Thai have Amateur and Professional competition.

  • What type of classes do you offer?

We have classes for all ages and skill levels. We have a 6-12 years Primary class, and our Adults classes which are 13 years and up.
