Understanding Rank & Grading at Kings Academy
At Kings Academy, ranking isn't just a formality; it's a reflection of consistent effort, developing skill and genuine progress on the mats. Every belt, stripe or level represents time invested, technique refined, and a student who has shown up, put in the work, and earned recognition from their coaches.
Our grading system is not based on a fixed timeline. Progression depends on technical ability, consistency of training, attitude, and a student's understanding of the fundamentals appropriate to their level. Every student progresses at their own pace, and our coaches assess readiness individually rather than promoting purely based on time served.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu follows the traditional belt system, progressing through White, Blue, Purple, Brown and Black, with degree stripes awarded at Black Belt level to recognise ongoing experience and contribution to the sport.
Muay Thai students progress through Kings Academy's own ranking system, recognising growing technical skill, conditioning and fight readiness, culminating in Black rank for our most experienced practitioners.
Wrestling students progress through numbered levels, reflecting increasing technical mastery of takedowns, control and live wrestling ability.
Kids' programs in BJJ and Muay Thai use a dedicated junior grading system, appropriate for younger students, helping children build confidence and see clear, achievable milestones as they develop their skills.
