Is MMA Right for My Child? Understanding the Path to MMA Training

Learn more about our Kids Martial Arts programs

Many parents come to us asking whether their child can start training MMA. It's an understandable question, MMA is exciting to watch, and plenty of kids grow up admiring fighters the way other kids look up to footballers or cricketers. But at Kings Academy, we don't offer MMA classes for young children, and there's a good reason for that. Instead, we've built a clear pathway that gives kids something far more valuable: a genuine foundation in every skill MMA is built from, well before they ever step into an MMA class.

Why We Don't Teach MMA to Young Children

MMA is, by nature, an integration sport. It combines striking, grappling and wrestling into one system, and applying those skills together, under pressure, requires a level of technical foundation that takes real time to build. Our MMA program is specifically for teens and adults aged 16 and up, and we expect students to already have a solid grounding in striking and grappling before they begin.

That's not a restriction we place on young children arbitrarily. It's the same principle any serious combat sports program follows: you build the individual pieces first, then learn how to put them together.

The Path We Recommend Instead: Kids Martial Arts

Rather than MMA, children start in our dedicated Kids Martial Arts program, where they build genuine skill across Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling in age-appropriate, safely structured classes.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches kids ground control, positional awareness and problem solving, skills that map directly onto the grappling side of MMA later on.

Muay Thai introduces striking fundamentals through pads and structured combinations, building the coordination and technique that forms the striking half of MMA.

Boxing sharpens footwork, hand speed and defensive skills, another core building block of any well-rounded fighter.

Wrestling builds the takedowns, balance and control that underpin both self-defence and, eventually, the ability to dictate where a fight happens, on the feet or on the ground.

Each of these disciplines is valuable entirely on its own. Most of our young students aren't training with MMA as the end goal at all, they're building confidence, discipline, fitness and real skills that serve them well regardless of what they choose to do next.

The Natural Progression to MMA

As children grow into their teenage years, many who've trained across these disciplines find they naturally have the tools MMA requires. By the time they're ready to join our Teen and Adult classes, they're not starting from scratch, they already understand grappling control, striking technique, and defensive fundamentals, built up over years of training rather than crammed into a few early sessions.

This is exactly why our MMA program sits at 13 and up. It's not an arbitrary cutoff, it's the point where a student who's come through Kids Martial Arts and our Teen programs typically has the skill base to integrate everything they've learned and start training MMA properly, safely and effectively.

What If My Child Is Specifically Interested in MMA One Day?

That's genuinely one of the best reasons to start Kids Martial Arts early. Rather than waiting until they're old enough for MMA and starting from zero, training across BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling as a child means they'll arrive at MMA training already equipped with real, hard-earned skill, giving them a genuine head start over someone starting MMA with no combat sports background at all.

Ready to Start the Right Way?

If your child is interested in martial arts, and MMA is somewhere on their radar for the future, the best thing you can do today is get them started in the disciplines that actually build toward it.

"Building better people through martial arts," says Elvis Sinosic, UFC veteran and founder of Kings Academy.
