NERVOUS ABOUT STARTING HOT YOGA? DON'T BE!
My First Hot Yoga Class: What to Expect
So you've decided to try Hot Yoga, but you're not quite sure what to expect. Don't worry, you're not alone! Many beginners have the same questions before their first class: what to wear, how hot the studio really is, and whether they'll keep up. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can walk in feeling prepared and confident.
What Should I Wear to My First Hot Yoga Class?
Wear light, comfortable activewear that allows you to move and stretch freely, shorts, leggings, or a fitted t-shirt all work well. Avoid anything heavy or restrictive, since you'll be perspiring more than in a regular workout thanks to the heated studio. Bring a water bottle and a small towel, and consider a yoga mat towel if you have one, since the heat means your mat can get slippery as the class goes on.
What Happens in a Typical Hot Yoga Class?
Most Hot Yoga classes at Sydney Hot Yoga (located inside Kings Academy of Martial Arts) follow a similar structure, especially for beginners:
Arrival and Settling In
Arrive a few minutes early to find your spot, roll out your mat, and let your body start adjusting to the heat of the studio. This settling-in period is a good time to take a few deep breaths and mentally shift out of your day.
Breathing and Warm-Up
Class typically opens with guided breathing and gentle movement to prepare your body for the postures ahead. This is where your instructor sets the pace for the class and helps you start tuning into your body.
The Postures
You'll move through a structured sequence of postures, each demonstrated and explained by your instructor. Every posture can be modified to suit your flexibility and fitness level, nobody expects you to nail every pose in your first class. The heat helps your muscles relax and stretch more comfortably than in a regular, unheated class, while still giving your heart, lungs and muscles a genuine workout.
Cool Down and Savasana
Class finishes with a cool-down and a period of stillness (savasana), letting your body and mind fully settle after the heat and movement. Many students find this the most valuable part of the whole class.
Hot Yoga Etiquette for Beginners
Yoga studios have a calm, respectful culture that's easy to settle into. A few key points to keep in mind:
- Listen to your body. If you need to pause, sit down, or take a break during class, you're always encouraged to do so — this is a personal practice, not a competition.
- Keep noise and distractions to a minimum. Yoga studios are generally quiet, focused spaces.
- Hydrate before, not during frantic sips. Sipping water when needed is fine, but try to hydrate well before class so you're not gulping mid-posture.
- Respect the shared space. Set up your mat with a little distance from others, and be mindful of the people around you as you move through postures.
Will I Be the Only Beginner?
No. Every class includes a genuine mix of complete beginners, students returning after time away, and experienced yogis practising alongside each other. Our instructors are used to guiding first-timers through class and will always offer modifications, so you'll never feel out of place.
Should I Eat Before My First Class?
We recommend avoiding a large meal for around two hours before class, though a light snack beforehand is fine if you need it. Drinking plenty of water throughout the day (not just right before class) will help you feel comfortable and hydrated in the heated studio.
Do I Need to Be Flexible?
No. Flexibility is something that develops through consistent practice, not a requirement before you start. Many students begin Hot Yoga specifically because they want to improve their flexibility, you don't need it walking in the door.
