What Should I Expect at My First Wrestling Class?
So you've decided to try Wrestling, but you're not quite sure what to expect. Don't worry - you're not alone! Many beginners have the same questions before their first class: what to wear, how the session is structured, and what kind of people they'll be training with. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can walk in feeling prepared and confident.
What Should I Wear to My First Wrestling Class?
You don't need any special gear for your first session. Comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely is all you need — a fitted t-shirt or rashguard, athletic shorts or leggings, and bare feet or wrestling shoes if you have them. Avoid anything loose, baggy, or with zippers and buttons, since these can catch during grappling exchanges. As you continue training, we'll let you know if any specific gear is recommended for ongoing classes.
What Happens in a Typical Wrestling Class?
Most Wrestling classes at Kings Academy follow a similar structure, especially for beginners:
Warm-Up
Class starts with a warm-up designed to get your heart rate up and prepare your body for grappling - light jogging, dynamic stretching, and basic movement drills like sprawls and shots. If these feel unfamiliar at first, that's completely normal. The warm-up exists to build these movements into your body over time, not to test you on day one.
Technique Drilling
After the warm-up, your coach will introduce a specific technique or sequence - a takedown, a sprawl, an escape, or a pinning combination. You'll drill this with a partner, taking turns so you both get plenty of repetitions. Everything is broken down step by step, so you'll never be shown something without a clear explanation of how and why it works.
Live Wrestling (Sparring)
Depending on the class and your comfort level, there may be some live wrestling toward the end of the session. As a beginner, this is usually kept light, positional, and closely supervised - a chance to test what you've just learned, not a full-intensity match.
Wrestling Etiquette for Beginners
Wrestling gyms have a strong culture of respect and discipline. A few key points to keep in mind:
- Respect your training partners. Wrestling is a partnership - you're both there to learn and improve together, regardless of experience level.
- Hygiene matters. Come to class clean, with trimmed nails, in freshly washed gear. Wrestling involves close contact, so good hygiene protects you and your partners.
- Communicate during live wrestling. If something doesn't feel right, or you need a moment to reset, say so. Your coach and training partners would rather you speak up than push through discomfort.
- Listen closely during demonstrations. Stay attentive while your coach is showing a technique, and save your questions for a natural pause.
Will I Be the Only Beginner?
No. Every class includes a genuine mix of complete beginners, students returning after time away, and more experienced wrestlers training alongside each other. Our coaches are used to guiding first-timers through class, and you'll often be paired with someone at a similar experience level so you can learn together.
How Is Wrestling Different from BJJ?
A common question from beginners exploring our programs: Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu both involve grappling, but the goals are different. In Wrestling, the primary aim is to control your opponent and win via a pin, with a strong focus on takedowns and stand-up grappling. In BJJ, the aim is to win via submission, with much more time spent working from the ground in both top and bottom positions. Many of our students train both, since the takedowns and control learned in Wrestling directly strengthen BJJ and MMA.
