So you've decided to try boxing, but you're not quite sure what to expect. Don't worry, you're not alone. Many beginners have the same questions before their first class: what to wear, how the session is structured, and what kind of people they'll be training with. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so you can walk in feeling prepared and confident.

What Should I Wear to My First Boxing Class?

You don't need any special gear for your first session. Comfortable athletic clothing that allows you to move freely is all you need, a fitted t-shirt or singlet, athletic shorts or leggings, and running shoes with good grip. Avoid anything loose or restrictive that could get in the way while you move around the bag or work with a partner. Boxing gloves and hand wraps are usually provided or available to borrow for your first class, so there's no need to buy anything before you've decided if boxing is right for you.

What Happens in a Typical Boxing Class?

Most boxing classes at Kings Academy follow a similar structure, especially for beginners.

Warm-Up

Class starts with a warm-up designed to get your heart rate up and prepare your body for the session ahead, things like skipping, shadow boxing, and dynamic stretching. If skipping isn't your strong suit yet, that's completely normal. It's a skill that improves quickly with a bit of practice.

Technique Drilling

After the warm-up, your coach will break down a specific technique, a jab, a cross, footwork, or head movement. You'll drill this in front of a mirror or with a partner holding pads, taking your time to get the movement right before adding speed or power.

Pad Work

A big part of boxing training is hitting focus mitts held by a coach or training partner. This is where you'll combine the techniques you've learned into combinations, building timing, accuracy and confidence in a controlled setting.

Conditioning

Many classes finish with conditioning work, things like core exercises, bodyweight movements or short bag rounds, sparring drills, etc to build the fitness and stamina boxing is known for.

Boxing Etiquette for Beginners

Boxing gyms have a strong culture of respect and discipline. A few key points to keep in mind:

  • Respect your training partners. Whether you're holding pads or working a combination together, you're both there to help each other improve.
  • Listen closely during demonstrations. Stay attentive while your coach is showing a technique, and save your questions for a natural pause.
  • Control your power early on. Pad work and partner drills are about technique and timing, not knocking your partner's hands off. Power comes with time.
  • Hygiene matters. Come to class clean, with trimmed nails, in freshly washed gear.

Will I Be the Only Beginner?

No. Every class includes a genuine mix of complete beginners, students returning after time away, and more experienced boxers training alongside each other. Our coaches are used to guiding first timers through class, and you'll often be paired with someone at a similar level so you can learn together.

Do I Need to Spar in My First Class?

No. As a beginner, your first classes focus entirely on technique, pad work and conditioning. Live sparring is introduced gradually, only once you're ready, and always under close coach supervision. It's never something you're required to do from day one.
