My Kids Martial Arts Class: What to Expect

NOT SURE WHAT TO EXPECT AT YOUR CHILD'S FIRST CLASS? HERE'S EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW

Find out about our Kids Martial Arts Classes

So you've decided to bring your child along to their first martial arts class, but you're not quite sure what to expect. Don't worry, you're not alone. Many parents have the same questions before that first session: what to wear, what the classes actually involve, and how it all works for different ages. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know so both you and your child can walk in feeling prepared.

What Should My Child Wear to Their First Class?

Comfortable athletic clothing is all your child needs for their first session, a t-shirt, shorts or leggings, and bare feet, since most classes are trained without shoes. There's no need to buy a uniform or any equipment before you've had a chance to see if it's the right fit. If your child continues training, we'll let you know if anything specific is recommended.

What Martial Arts Do Kids Learn at Kings Academy?

At Kings Academy, kids can train across four different martial arts, and which ones are available depends on their age.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)

BJJ is grappling based, teaching kids control, balance and problem solving on the ground. It's taught through games and structured drills that build coordination and confidence while keeping things fun.

Muay Thai

Muay Thai introduces striking through pads and structured combinations, helping kids build coordination, discipline and fitness in a safe, supervised environment.

Boxing

Boxing focuses on footwork, hand speed and technique, giving kids a great introduction to striking fundamentals alongside genuine fitness benefits.

Wrestling

Wrestling builds strength, balance and control through takedowns and positional work, and is a fantastic foundation for any other martial art your child goes on to train.

How Do Classes Work for Different Ages?

Ages 3 to 5

Our youngest students train BJJ only. At this age, classes are all about building listening skills, coordination and confidence through movement and play, with BJJ's grappling based nature suiting this age group perfectly.

Ages 6 to 12

From age 6, kids can train across all four disciplines, BJJ, Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling. Many kids focus on one style while others enjoy training a mix, and our coaches can help guide your child toward what suits them best.

Teens 13 and Up

Once your child reaches 13, they move into our Teens and Adults classes. This is a natural next step for kids who have been training with us, and also a great starting point for teens who are brand new to martial arts.

What Happens in a Typical Kids Class?

Classes are structured to keep kids engaged from start to finish, with a warm up, a technique focused section where coaches break skills down step by step, and time to practice with training partners. Everything is paced to suit the age group in the class, and coaches are experienced at keeping things fun while still teaching real skills.

Will My Child Be the Only Beginner?

No. Every class includes a genuine mix of complete beginners and kids who have been training for a while. Our coaches are used to welcoming new students into class, and your child will quickly find their feet alongside other kids at a similar stage.

What About Parents?

We ask a lot of our coaches when it comes to setting a good example, patience, encouragement and respect in every class. We ask exactly the same of our parents. Our Parents Code of Conduct is built on the idea that kids learn as much from what they see as what they're taught, so we ask parents to support their child positively, encourage good sportsmanship, and treat coaches, staff and other families with the same respect we expect on the mats. It's a genuine partnership between the academy and home that helps every child get the most out of their training.
