One of the most common questions we hear at Kings Academy is, "What happens at my first BJJ class?" Whether you're looking to improve your fitness, learn self-defence, build confidence, or simply try something new, walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating.
The good news is that your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is designed for beginners. You don't need any experience, you don't need to be fit, and you certainly don't need to know how to fight.
At Kings Academy, our instructors and students remember exactly what it was like to be beginners themselves. Our goal is to make your first class enjoyable, welcoming, and rewarding.
Here's exactly what you can expect.
What Is a Beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class Like?
Your first class focuses on learning—not winning.
Unlike what you may have seen in MMA or professional competitions, beginner classes are structured to help you develop skills safely and progressively.
You'll be introduced to the fundamentals of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in a supportive environment where everyone understands that you're learning.
Expect plenty of instruction, demonstrations, and partner drills with coaches available to guide you every step of the way.
Nobody expects perfection.
Everyone starts as a white belt.
What Should I Wear to My First BJJ Class?
Don't worry if you don't own a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu uniform yet.
For your first class, simply wear:
- A comfortable t-shirt or rash guard
- Athletic shorts without zippers
- Leggings or compression pants if preferred
- A water bottle
- A towel if you'd like
If you're attending a Gi class, Kings Academy can usually provide a loan uniform for your trial.
Avoid clothing with zippers, buttons or pockets, as these can scratch training partners or become damaged during training.
Most importantly, wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely.
What Should I Bring?
You don't need much to get started.
Bring:
- Water bottle
- Towel
- Comfortable training clothes
- Thongs or slides to wear off the mats
- A positive attitude
Before class, it's also good practice to:
- Trim your fingernails and toenails
- Remove jewellery
- Maintain good personal hygiene
These small habits help keep everyone safe and comfortable during training.
Do I Need to Be Fit Before Starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Absolutely not.
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Many beginners believe they need to "get fit first" before joining a gym.
The reality is exactly the opposite.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu helps you become fit.
Every experienced student was once a beginner who became fitter by consistently attending classes.
At Kings Academy, you'll train at your own pace. You can take breaks whenever you need, and your fitness will naturally improve over time.
Whether you're 18 or 58, athletic or completely new to exercise, you'll be supported throughout your journey.
Will I Have to Spar on My First Day?
No.
One of the biggest concerns beginners have is whether they'll immediately have to fight experienced students.
At Kings Academy, beginners are never forced to spar.
Your first class focuses on learning basic techniques and understanding how Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu works.
If live training is introduced, it is carefully supervised and matched appropriately to your experience level. For beginners we focus on situational rounds, usually practising the moves you just learnt in class.
Our coaches prioritise safety, learning, and confidence—not ego.
You are always encouraged to progress at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
What Happens During a Typical BJJ Class?
Although every class is slightly different, most beginner classes follow a similar structure.
Warm-Up
Classes usually begin with movement drills designed to improve mobility, coordination and body awareness.
These movements also prepare your body for training.
Technique Instruction
Your coach demonstrates one or more techniques in detail.
These may include:
- Escapes
- Sweeps
- Guard positions
- Submissions
- Takedowns
- Positional control
Every technique is broken down step by step.
Partner Drilling
You'll work with a training partner to practise the technique.
This is where real learning happens.
Instructors walk around the room, helping everyone improve their movements and answering questions.
Positional Training or Rolling
Depending on the class and your experience level, students may participate in controlled sparring (known as "rolling"). If you have sufficient previous experience, you'll be permitted to roll.
If you're brand new, your coach will guide you through what's appropriate for your level. Usually beginners will only do positional sparring, generally practising the moves you just learnt in the class.
Remember, training is about learning, not winning.
What Is the Etiquette in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gym?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has a strong culture of respect.
You don't need to know all the traditions before arriving, but these simple guidelines will help.
Be on time
Arriving a few minutes early allows you to meet the instructor and settle in.
Listen to your coach
Pay attention during demonstrations and ask questions if you're unsure.
Respect your training partners
Everyone is there to learn.
Train safely and avoid using unnecessary strength.
Tap early
If you're caught in a submission, simply tap your partner or the mat, or if you arms are stuck just say "tap" or "stop".
Tapping is normal.
Even black belts tap.
It's how everyone trains safely.
Leave your ego at the door
The goal isn't to prove you're tough.
The goal is to improve a little every class.
What Happens After My First Class?
Most people finish their first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class feeling two things:
"I learned far more than I expected."
…and…
"I can't wait to come back."
After class, your coach will answer any questions you have and discuss the best beginner program based on your goals.
Whether you're interested in:
- Self-defence
- Fitness
- Competition
- Weight loss
- Stress relief
- Learning a new skill
We'll help you create a training plan that suits your schedule and experience.
Remember, nobody becomes good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu overnight.
Consistency beats perfection.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need any experience before starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
No. Beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are specifically designed for people with no previous martial arts experience. Your instructor will teach the fundamentals step by step, and you'll train alongside other beginners in a supportive environment. Everyone starts as a white belt, so there's no expectation that you'll already know any techniques.
Can I start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu if I'm overweight or unfit?
Absolutely. You don't need to get fit before joining a BJJ class—training is what helps you improve your fitness. Classes can be adapted to your current fitness level, and you'll gradually build strength, endurance, flexibility, and confidence as you continue training.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu safe for beginners?
Yes. Safety is a top priority in every beginner class. Techniques are taught in a controlled environment under the supervision of experienced instructors. You'll learn how to train safely, communicate with your training partners, and tap if a submission becomes uncomfortable. Beginners are never expected to do anything beyond their ability.
How many times a week should a beginner train BJJ?
Most beginners see excellent progress by training two to three times per week. This allows enough time to develop new skills while giving your body time to recover. Consistency is more important than training every day, especially when you're just starting.
What age is too old to start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
There is no age limit for starting Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Many adults begin training in their 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond. Classes can be modified to suit different fitness levels and goals, whether you're looking for self-defence, fitness, or simply a new challenge.

People Also Ask
Does Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Hurt?
Like any physical activity, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can leave you feeling tired and a little sore, especially after your first few classes. However, beginner training is focused on learning techniques rather than using strength or aggression. At Kings Academy, our instructors emphasise safety, proper technique, and controlled training, helping you build confidence while minimising the risk of injury.
What If I'm Nervous About My First BJJ Class?
Feeling nervous before your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class is completely normal. Almost every student has the same concerns about not knowing what to do or feeling out of place. The good news is that everyone in the academy started as a beginner. Our coaches will introduce you to the class, explain each exercise, and pair you with supportive training partners, so you can learn at your own pace.
Can I Wear Gym Clothes to My First BJJ Class?
Yes. If you're attending your first beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class, comfortable gym clothes are perfectly acceptable. A t-shirt or rash guard and athletic shorts without zippers or pockets are ideal. If you're joining a Gi class, Kings Academy can usually provide a loan uniform for your free trial, so you don't need to purchase any equipment before your first lesson.
How Long Is a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class?
Most beginner Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes at Kings Academy run for approximately 60 minutes. A typical class includes a warm-up, technical instruction, partner drills, and, depending on your experience level, some controlled positional training or sparring. Your instructor will guide you through each part of the class, making it easy to follow even if it's your very first session.
Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Good for Self-Defence?
Yes. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is widely regarded as one of the most effective martial arts for real-world self-defence. It teaches you how to control, escape, and defend yourself against a larger or stronger opponent using leverage and technique rather than relying on size or strength. These practical skills build both confidence and personal safety.
How Long Does It Take to Get Good at Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
You'll begin learning useful techniques from your very first class, but becoming proficient in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu takes consistent practice. Most beginners notice significant improvements in confidence, fitness, and skill within the first three to six months of regular training. Progress isn't about being perfect—it's about showing up, learning, and improving a little each week.
Am I Too Old to Start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?
Not at all. Adults of all ages start Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu every year, including people in their 30s, 40s, 50s, and beyond.
